In the UK we use Ordinance Survey Data as the basis of lots of our analysis and diagrams to inform masterplan development. Working with Lacunae we have been experimenting with using open source software to model terrain in more detail onto OS data information. DEFRA have open source LIDAR information to 1m. Using this information alongside OS Open Map shapefiles we are able to build convincing models in Rhino on top of licenced OS infromation. Strategic diagrams can now be produced on a realistic visual model. The workflow involved using QGIS to generate the 3D meshes from the LIDAR information, the rest was some hardwork in Rhino with a little help from Grasshopper. All this information is free of use and can be found in the following places. QGIS. LIDAR. OS Shapefiles.
